It's Rednesday Again

It's that time again, my gal pal Sue has her Mr Linky up and ready.
If you are too shy to join and post your lovely redness, won't you stop
by to see what others are sharing? Feel free to tell her I sent you!
I love RED, so here is my contribution this week...
Our local "Red-Red Robin",
Some lovely red vintage linens, and since this is supposed to be a gardening blog,
I picked this "tomato" from my Grandmother's closet, we don't have any tomatoes growing
in our corner of the Garden State just yet, but take a look at this lovely red popping up
in the garden this week.....
Thanks as always for stopping by to check out our corner of the Garden State,
I'll be back tomorrow with new pics of what we're up to here.

Why the Farming Crisis Has Everything to Do With the Economic Crisis

Read why some believe we need a 50 year farm bill.
This whole topic gets me a little hot under the collar.
I'm really wish I did not have to support FARM AID, there should
be (even in a not so perfect world) no need for it, I'd rather see advertisements
for AIG AID. Know what I mean? Yes, I have to support Farm Aid, it's really
quite simple, NO FARMS,NO FOOD.
I can't tell you how strongly I feel about this. There are many things we spend
our money on that we don't NEED, food is not one of them.
Remember, you are what you eat. Do you want to be a ripe, luscious, Jersey Tomato?
Or High Fructose Corn Syrup (with or without mercury)?
The choice is up to you.

Looking for a tomato

well, actually I'm looking for a tomato that will grow in
Denver,Colorado. Preferably an heirloom.
Any suggestions?
My Aunt says she wants to grow an heirloom tomato, and since we grow them here
in an identical climate (yes, the emphasis and sarcasm are all mine)in New Jersey,
she asked us for seed. Normally I encourage one and all to grow something...anything..in their own yard,
but I know she is not going to grow anything. She may however hire someone to do it for her.
Growing is growing, so I will ask...what kind of heirloom tomato will grow in Denver?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't believe it has been so long since I updated here.
We have been eating from the garden every day and
canning..green beans, catsup, etc.
The tomatoes are definitely here.
Need to go pick green beans..again.

Tomato Pictures

This is what the garden looks like in the morning. Here are the three rows (5 sections)of tomatoes and then the skinny row of asparagus.

Today was bright and sunny and warm enough to be in short sleeves.
We spent most of it outside, weeding, transplanting, cleaning the play
structures, toys and furniture. We ate all of our meals outside too.

The peppers lined up like good little soldiers.(above)
A flower on the peas!
Cherries!

Now we are all bone tired.

Tomatoes go in, and the rain comes down

We finally put our tomatoes in the ground last night.
We have culled down our list a bit to the tomatoes we especially liked
and there was a great deal more debate over this than "normal" households
may think. Because
  • A)we have limited space, and so we just can not grow all we want.
  • B)you cannot live on Tomatoes alone (hard to believe, I know, but it is true.)

We still have more plants, and hopefully we'll be able to plant them
this weekend at the community garden plot.
Two of each variety went in unless otherwise noted.
The varieties in are as follows (there may be additions/changes later)
  1. Green Zebra
  2. Amish Paste
  3. Big Month
  4. Eva's Purple Ball
  5. Kosova
  6. Azoycka
  7. Tappy's Heritage
  8. Mortgage Lifter
  9. Rouge d'Iraq
  10. Bonny Best
  11. Bloody Butcher
  12. Cherokee Purple
  13. Big Rainbow
  14. Paul Robeson
  15. Black Krim
  16. Anna Russian
  17. Prudence Purple
  18. Purple Russian
  19. Japanese Black Trifle
  20. Rose
  21. Giant Belgium
  22. San Marzano (4)
  23. Amana Orange
  24. Golden Ponderosa*
  25. Orange Heirloom
  26. Pineapple
  27. Dad's Sunset
  28. Flame
  29. Golden Pineapple
  30. Thai Pink Egg (1)
  31. Black Prince (1)*
  32. Russian Persimmon*
  33. Snowball
  34. Orange Banana
* I must remember to save seed for these varieties this year.
I did not get pictures, and it is raining today, so maybe tomorrow.
